To be drawn towards a people group or country doesn’t mean you swoop in to fix their problems, or try and make them assimilate to your culture, but to listen and adapt yourself to their culture. It is to open your eyes to the weaknesses and arrogance of your own culture, and to change not the people but yourself. True mission is not so much about giving as learning to receive; not so much about speaking as listening.
What if our hearts still dream big, when we are forced to live small? How much do you sacrifice of yourself to achieve your dream?
The truth is those words of rejection don’t get to define us. We know not what the future holds, and it is a mistake to project the ‘now’ onto the ‘not yet’.

I’m a mezzo soprano, mezzo meaning ‘middle’ and sounding like ‘messy’, both of which I feel. In our culture, we are accustomed to disdaining the middle. The words ‘average’ and ‘mediocre’ sound insulting – we like the top, and even the bottom; we like the extremes, the specialisms.
This month The Mudroom is exploring the lives of forgotten women, history-changers who may not have made it into most of our history books. I’ve loved learning a bit more about amazing women of God who’ve changed lives in the past.
