Radio 4 – Something Understood (with John McCarthy)

I’m honoured to be on ‘In the world but not of the world’ programme today as part of the Something Understood series. It was broadcast today at 06:05 BST on BBC Radio 4, and will be repeated tonight at 23:30. The whole 30 minute program is fascinating, taking the phrase ‘in the world but not of the world’, and exploring what it means to be in some way disconnected from society. John McCarthy shares his perspective too, as someone who was formerly held captive.

It is up on iPlayer, and if you just want my section you can scroll to 5:08 ish and listen there (my section is 5 minutes long). Something Understood- In the World but not of the World – on BBC Radio 4 iPlayer (available till 22 June)

UPDATE JULY 2014: The wonderful James of JPC Design has been assisting me with his website geekery so you can listen online.

If you missed the show, you can hear my section here.

And you can hear the full programme here.

Happy listening!

I loved hearing your part on the programme. It summed up so much of how I feel about having ME both the pain and frustration, but also God’s ability to use absolutely anything to bring forth something of value. You spoke so eloquently and it was such a comfort to me to hear you express the reality of ME. So my gold for this week has definitely been finding your website and starting to read your blogs. Thank you for speaking out. It is very much valued.

Hi Lisa – it’s lovely to see another person with ME on here. I’m honoured to be your ‘gold’ for this week, and I’m so glad you found this website. Hope to ‘see’ you again soon. 🙂

I enjoyed the whole programme and thought it was very interesting, but of course, I especially enjoyed listening to you. I loved hearing your thoughts on suffering, creativity and community.

Thank you, Rebecka! I’m honoured that you tuned in all the way from Sweden! Hurrah!

Really enjoyed the whole program, but especially getting to hear you talk about your experiences. While of course I wish you didn’t have to suffer, I’m so glad there is someone out there using their lifestory to inspire others in similar situations. You are living out Prov. 31:8… giving voice to the voiceless. #proverbs31woman. 😉

Thanks so much for listening, Jenna! And thanks so much for giving me that Proverbs 31:8 verse – I read vv8-9 again, and felt my heart burning. This really is where my passion is. Thank you for seeing that.

I was just thinking about the cost for you in doing something like this – I hope it hasn’t set you back too severely.

    • Tanya 22nd June, 2014 at 10:27 am #

Bless you for even thinking of this! The interview was done a few weeks earlier, and they were really good about getting it done at my home, and in the speediest way possible so I used minimal energy, which was really helpful. So – hopefully no set back!

        So glad to hear it!

I listened yesterday and enjoyed the program very much. I am so thankful for your ability to articulate your experience and the things you’ve learned though it. I find comfort words that do not deny the loss and difficulty, but equally acknowledge the good to be found in the midst of it.

I liked your comments regarding creativity coming from emptiness, explaining why so many artists live in the margins, and that we are built for eternity, suffering reminding us that this world is not all there is.

    • Tanya 22nd June, 2014 at 10:25 am #

Thanks so much for stopping by, Stephanie, and for telling me the bits that spoke to you. I always really like to hear the bits that people connected with. I have been thinking a lot recently about creativity coming from emptiness, and the way that artists are often the prophets of society. (Beth Morey, Jamie Bonilla and Esther Emery have been helping me think through these things – they are people I would describe as ‘prophet-artists’).

Thank you for alerting us to that, Tanya. It rang many bells about what I miss, the difficulty of praying – and the gold that’s buried in suffering.
And it was good to hear your voice. Interesting how immediately it created a connection.

    • Tanya 22nd June, 2014 at 10:23 am #

Michael, I am SO chuffed that you listened to me! Thank you – and I’m glad to have made the connection.

Loved your contribution to the programme – and what a sensitive response from John MacCarthy. For once I was pleased to be listening to the radio instead of sleeping!
I have ME to – since 1984 – but I’m out of bed for two hours twice a day so count myself very lucky.

    • Tanya 22nd June, 2014 at 10:22 am #

Thanks so much for your encouragement, Jen! I agree – a really lovely and sensitive response from John McCarthy. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had ME for so long. 2 hours out of bed doesn’t sound very much… But I know what you mean about counting yourself lucky, because I know something of the horrors that very severe ME can be.

    Tanya,

I listened twice and really enjoyed what you had to say. I hate that you have to suffer. I do believe that creativity can come from emptiness. I know some of the poems I write or just thoughts I put down come from an emptiness or longing. You always do a great job writing about suffering and writing about what you learn through it that I know helps so many. Not only are you “Tanya Marlow Prayer Warrior” you are “Tanya Marlow the Warrior who encourages.”

I hope those things you miss so you will be able to do them again. 🙂

It was awesome to hear your accent as you speak.

    • Tanya 22nd June, 2014 at 10:21 am #

Thanks so much for listening, all the way from America! “poems…from longing” – yes, I can definitely relate to that, too. It always makes me smile when you call me a Warrior. 🙂
