All Change

It’s ‘Five minute Friday’ time, joining with Lisa-Jo Baker.

She gives us 1 word,

we write for 5 minutes flat – no backtracking or editing, throwing caution to the wind.

This is my best five minutes on ‘Change’
Yellow Autumn leave

There’s a coolness in the breeze, and I keep having dreams about packing up and feeling sad.

I can hear the sound of the dry leaves blowing across the road. Our apple tree already thinks autumn has come, and there are brown leaves scattered all around our garden.

They are heralding the start of a new school term. September is- well, tomorrow (how did that happen?) and with it comes new programs, new ideas. I am looking forward to us welcoming some 20-somethings into our home each week as we start a new group. I am submerging the thought that wonders if I will be well enough to be part of the group for the whole term. I am excited about the ideas I have for the blog, and scared that my health may not allow them.

I have had such an amazing August, with steady health, a restful rhythm. Jon taking the boy lots has enabled me to do much resting, and I have felt a freedom in my writing.

Now I am having dreams about packing up and going, and I think it is because of this small feeling of dread as the new term starts. Even from my bed I can feel the pull of the treadmill of the new school year.

And behind all that, Emeli Sande’s voice rings at the back of my mind with the song of the Olympic opening ceremony:

Change and decay all around I see
O thou who changest not
Abide with me.

Over to you:

  • How are you feeling about the new term?
  • What does it mean to you to have an unchanging God?

    “O thou who changest not
    Abide with me.”

I remember as a child thinking that the unchangeable nature of God seemed…boring. But as an adult I’m amazed at how comforting that his. Such an anchor in the world that seems more unpredictable the more time I spend in it.

    Love this post. (as always!)

Yes – I can so relate to that! – the differing perspectives of childhood and adulthood. I love your insight here – thank you.

Oh Tanya, your words here are so filled with so much of the beautiful. Your heart shines through radiantly here, friend. Loving Lisa-Jo’s choice for today. CHANGE. It packs a big bunch of raw emotion. Love visiting with you today. The prayer of my heart is that your health will be improving steadily and you will be stronger day by day.(I am not aware of the specifics but I hear it in your words πŸ™‚ )

“Even from my bed I can feel the pull of the treadmill of the new school year.”
I hear that, sister! I do not have M.E., but I can identify with the pull toward the busy even while you are in your restful place. Changing the rhythm of life to a pace that is healthier for us, physically and/or mentally, is difficult and runs counter to the society that calls us to be more, do more. I am so grateful for you and the words you share.

Jenn – you are lovely. That is all. πŸ™‚

I know God will continue to use you as He will and already does.
Have you read Rob Parsons’ ‘What they didn’t teach me in Sunday School’ ? There is a chapter where he recalls how he & Dianne led a study group (in their case it was for stragglers) in a season when Dianne was house-bound with an immune disorder. The whole book is simply one story after another where Gods love shines through weakness & difficulties (my copy is so battered & tear-stained!) Always worth a read or re-read for anyone.
Bless you both in your venture with the new group.
    Jo x
PS I too loved Emeli Sande’s rendition of ‘Abide with me’ – so moving

And thanks for your encouragement – as ever πŸ™‚

I love the in-between seasons – when old is fading and new is coming. Change breathes new life…new hope. Visiting from 5 Minute Fridays.

“Thou who changest not, abide in me”. I love that! When everything else is changing – from the morning routines to the feeling in the air – He forever stays the same. I needed that reminder this morning. Thank you for sharing!
